Homework

A girl struggling with her homework symbolizing the anxiety therapy available at Cross The Bridge Counseling in Middletown and Rock Hill, NY

At the end of every summer, and often throughout the fall, we see many children come to us with complaints of anxiety, disillusionment, or fear about going back to or participating in a daily routine around school.

If your child tries to avoid school, complains of a stomach ache each morning, or refuses to get on the bus or in the car, give us a call. Anxiety is a serious condition that deeply affects your child’s experience of life. Signs of anxiety in children may not be as obvious as with adults — while some symptoms may appear similar, they are often not as pronounced. It is important to address anxiety in children as soon as symptoms appear to prevent a full-blown anxiety disorder from developing later in life.

Some symptoms to watch out for include:

  • Frequent headaches, stomach aches, nausea, or insomnia
  • Resistance to going to school
  • Unusual or disproportionate reaction to an upcoming test
  • Difficulty relating to peers or being involved in group or social activities
  • Making excuses to get out of activities children normally enjoy
  • Emotional problems, including crying often or easily
  • Feelings of insecurity, or that they are being watched

No pills are prescribed or recommended as part of our counseling plans. Play Therapy is often effective in soothing these feelings and teaching your child how to manage their own feelings. For more information, please give us a call at (845) 342-5789.
